We are delighted to welcome Geoff to The Exceptional English Wine Company not only as a Friendly Wine Buff but also as our resident Expert as his knowledge is outstanding. Having gained a place at Oxford University he was then whipped away to do his National Service with the Queens Own Royal West Kent regiment as an officer in Somaliland. ‘Sundays were the best. A good deal of wine with a curry lunch followed by a game of polo!’ After he was decommissioned he went to work on a tea plantation in Assam and it was there that he realised that he had cracking taste buds and an ability to ‘spit’ with delicacy.

Unemployed tea planters were not sought after in the UK so, on his return in 1966, he became a temporary Christmas assistant at his local Victoria Wine shop. Within a year he was manager, had gained his WSET Diploma and became a key figure within the company. He also continued to work closely with WSET, training his students in what became his speciality, European wines.

His expertise is now focussed on our English wines so not only is he going to provide us each month with a textbook WSET tasting note but he is here to answer all your queries regarding the grapes, the techniques, the terroir so he looks forward to talking to you all.

Kate is an Australian lawyer who followed her husband to London in 2011 when they finally realised that the world’s longest commute could not go on indefinitely.

Australians and wine are synonymous and Kate is no exception to this rule. The move to London has at last given her the time to indulge her passion by visiting wineries and tasting wine across Europe.

Having recently completed her Wine Spirits and Educational Trust exams achieving a Pass with Distinction, The English Wine Company is delighted that Kate has agreed to join us bringing with her her Australian experience, her views and her excellent palate.
